I usually stop here to get my bearings. When I move this much metal around, it's easy to lose track of where I'm going. If I've made any mistakes, there's still room to get in to fix them.

Note the tubes going from the valve spring area to the pushrod tunnel so oil returns via the camshaft instead of the crankshaft as on a real Gold Star. I drill through the head and both sides of the pushrod tunnel with a long 1/8" drill bit. Then drill both sides of the pr tunnel 1/2" and tap the head 1/8" NPT. Now screw in 3/8" hollow tubes and weld one end to the pr tunnel a weld up the rest of the holes.

Most of the grinding out of the way. This early it's hard to tell for sure where you're going till some welding is done. I'll leave the walls extra thick so I can adjust as I go.

This was a 500cc head I'd already ported as far as I dared in the original casting. Notice how much room there is, IN PLACES, to raise the port and how you would be in the fins in others. This is the head in the photos below. Also imagine how much farther one could raise the port when a 3/8" aluminum spacer is pressed onto the guide and then welded to the head as in my "High Port" designs.

When the valve spring package and valve stem get 3/8" longer / higher at an angle and the back half of the rockerbox gets spaced straight up, the rocker no longer reaches the valve. The rockerarm ratio is wrong on British bikes anyway so lengthening the valve side of the rockerarm kills two birds with one stone.

A piston stop just before TDC. Turn the crank till it stops in each direction and adjust the wire marker till it's the same on the degree wheel in both directions and then zero is TDC.

With the valve spring package spaced up 3/8" there was no room so I cut the rockerbox in half and spaced up the rear half. Then it gets all welded back together.

Jim blew the start SO badly that I just turned around and started talking with Butch Donahue. Butch looked over my shoulder and says, "Your bike is out in front". Sure enough by the time he got to turn three where Dave shot this pic, he had passed one Honda, One Yamaha, and Nine Rotaxs and was leading the thing. Now I wished I'd watched how he did it. Elkhorn was a good track for us. We ran the BSA there four times and won four times.
